Week of Action a Full Success!
30.12.2008
In the week before Christmas, traditionally the most profitable time of year, a week of action was held for the campaign against ESCADA´s fur trade. Over thirty actions were carried out world wide, including many creative ones. There were demos in Tallinn, Geneva, Florence, Chicago, Salzburg, Hamburg, Berlin, Munich and Moscow amongst other places. The week of action kicked off in Germany with a telephone action day, in which anonymous activists called on people to contact ESCADA and to complain about the company´s fur trade. On the same day the company published it´s Quarterly Report, which didn´t exactly sparkle with positive figures ...
Activists in Tallinn and Hamburg displayed particular energy and demonstrated almost every day. We were also sent a report that a thousand leaflets were distributed around the neighbourhood where the chair of ESCADA´s supervisory board lives to inform about his involvement with the fur trade.
The week´s climax was probably a lock-on action in Düsseldorf. Here, two activists chained themselves to the doors of the ESCADA flagship store until they were "freed" by the fire brigade 45 minutes later. Business was therefore stopped at the store for some time and the action certainly grabbed the attention of passers-by.
All in all the Week of Action can only be seen as a great success. Large numbers of shoppers, who were on the streets during the holiday period were informed about ESCADA´s responsibility for the murder of so-called fur animals and the company was shown how hard-hitting a global campaign by the animal liberation movement can be. We hope that the next days of action will see just as wide an involvement, until ESCADA is fur-free!
