Escada Goes Fur-free! – Or Not Yet??

On March 5th the passersby of several German cities ( including Berlin, Hamburg, Münster, Dresden and Düsseldorf) were quite astonished: The company Escada had leaflets distributed in the inner cities, that claimed the stop of their fur trade. The customers were invited to the official party with champagne and a markdown drive in the stores.Deeply disappointed the customers then had to recognize that Escada keeps on selling fur products and therewith keeps on killing millions of animals, so-called furs. The Escada staff did also not know anything about this decision and came partly to the conclusion that “this must be the animal rights activists!”. Obviously activists relieved the company of the decision and thereby forced them to make a statement regarding their fur trade once again.
Escada tries to ignore the protest of the international animal liberation movement since the beginning of the campaign in 2007 – with little success: Regular rallies, big demonstrations, action days, civil disobedience, speeches during their shareholders´ meeting, telephone- and e-mail-protests as well as thousands of collected signatures remind Escada over and over again that they have to deal with protests from animal rights activists and animal liberationists as long as they are clinging to the fur-trade.
On the following Monday many journalists (including some from Italy and Ireland) contacted the campaigning network against the fur-trade at Escada. They tried to get a confirmation or a statement from Escada about them quitting the fur-trade, but they just got shaken off. Obviously Escada did as a result not just annoy earlier customers and passersby, but also parts of the international press.
In 2008 the group “The-Yes-Man” commented on a fake New-York-Times magazine, that, among other things, announced the end of Iraq war, saying “All the News we hope to print”. True to this motto the end of Escada´s fur-trade was probably announced early.
