Speciesism

The term speciesism refers to the historic forms, developed in a social process, in which the human-animal relationship is one of power and exploitation. The disadvantage – here mostly due to intended physical harm – for individuals other than humans has a materialistic (e.g. violence towards animals) as well as a symbolic (values, norms, attributions, language, customs etc. that reinforce the power and violence towards non-human animals) dimension.
